BACKGROUND
In the summer of 2016 I was working in Milwaukee and in search of a new job in Madison. My sister Coley, who was the Ad 2 Madison president at the time, told me to come to the annual birthday bash event to network. I made the commute from Milwaukee expecting to have some snacks, mingle a bit and make my way home. Little did I know The Digital Ring was sponsoring the event and all three partners were in attendance. I had heard about the agency in the past and knew it’d be a great opportunity to get my foot in the door. I inserted myself into their conversation and the rest is history. After talking with them, I started the interview process one week later and was quickly offered a job. Had I not attended the birthday bash, I’m not sure I’d have the job I do today.

LESSONS LEARNED

Although I am an outgoing person once I get to know people, I often find it difficult to get out of my comfort zone and strike up a conversation with someone new. When you’re at a networking event, it’s important to remember that most people are in the same boat and just as anxious as you to make new connections. Most people will be relieved that you’re initiating the conversation. In order to get your foot in the door with someone who works at a company you’re interested in, you have to insert yourself into their discussion and show them you are confident and a go-getter. At your next networking event, take a deep breath and start up a conversation with someone new. Ad 2 Madison is a great place to network and build connections. You never know who you’re going to meet and how that relationship will benefit you down the road.
